- construction firm's mammoth projects, from the Hoover Dam to a
- commercial boiling-water nuclear-power plant in Dresden, Ill.;
- in Oakland. Under Bechtel's leadership, the family-owned company
- managed West Coast shipyards during World War II and cultivated
- a lucrative relationship with the Saudi government, laying the
- trans-Arabian pipeline from the Persian Gulf to the
- Mediterranean.
